First of all, thank you to any and all of you who came to check out this blog, and Welcome to HollowReed’s Official Blog page! I created this blog mainly for two reasons. One, to keep all of you HollowReed fans up to date on new releases, news, up-coming events and performances. And secondly, to share with you all things that inspire me, how I compose music and my creative process, and hopefully start to get all of you involved in that process by letting you all decide what tracks you want me to produce. Sounds like a whole lot of fun to me!
Who Is HollowReed?
Born Shaun Edward Anderson, aka HollowReed, music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I guess I didn’t have much choice in the matter. My father (Eddie Anderson) was the baddest (as in bad ass) singer I had ever heard, and he made sure that our house was always full of music of all different types and genres. As a member of the late 60’s, early 70’s male R&B duo, The Swordsmen (Eddie Anderson/Ray Thompson), he would often drag me along to rehearsals and performances, so I was exposed to the music scene at an early age. The Swordsmen got their big break in 1969 when they signed under the Ninandy label for Stroud Productions. The Ninandy label was started by Nina Simone and her husband at the time, Andy Stroud. They recorded their first single, Oh My Soul, for Ninandy in 1970, which was an immediate hit. They went on to record two LP’s for RCA Records and spent two years touring with the incredible Nina Simone. To my surprise, those LP’s were uploaded to Spotify a few years back. You can check’em out HERE.
With all that history, it’s no surprise that my destiny as a music producer would come full circle. As friends and family will attest, it’s taken a loooong ass time and a whole lot of walking down dead end streets to get here, but here I am! No more excuses. Just music!
There is a Bahá’i prayer, written by George Townshend that says, “Oh God, make me a hollow reed, through which the pith of self hath been blown, so that I may become a clear channel through which Thy Love my flow to others.” Thus the name, HollowReed!
The Music
HollowReed’s music would definitely fall under the category of EDM, at least a good bit of it. There are so many genres and sub-genres of music these days, it can be challenging trying to figure out under which your music falls. That being said, I just write what I want and let the music critics decide where it falls. If I’d had to classify it myself, I’d say it’s a blend of house vibes—think Pop House, Classic House, Deep House, and UK Garage—with jazz-fusion and neo-soul twists. My artistic inspiration is all over the map, but in terms of modern house music, artists like Disclosure, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, and Fred Again keep me in the flow. With House, it’s all about creating dancefloor-ready tracks that bring together driving beats, lush chords, and soulful melodies. One the other hand, I love making Hip Hop and R&B as well. Honestly, I’m just letting this thing flow, myself and you hopefully, along for the ride.
Stay tune! I’ll be posting and sharing often (as often as I can). And please feel free to post any questions or comments.
